Paludarium, a small conservatory invented in England in the 19th century, is a plant protection machine that has been later exhibited at the Paris Expo and such. People placed a precious plant shipped from foreign lands inside of a glass-walled container, and appreciated watching its growing cycles at different lands and at their home far away from the plant's own home. The series of "Paludarium" is a result of new interpretation of Paludarium, which is now equipped with various functions and transformed into a contemporary encapsulated environmental system. "Paludarium KUMIKO" is the 9th version of this series.
The ninth edition in the series introduces a vertically split-unit design, a first for this body of work. While deliberately separating the plants from their surrounding environment, this art piece as a whole seeks to evoke a single, unified natural ecosystem.
The main unit, which houses the plants, follows the same approach as previous works in the series: a misting system operating from above, a heater to maintain a consistent internal temperature, and meticulous climate control throughout. Natural light enters through the glass panels, while fans on both sides recreate the presence of wind. A fully waterproof speaker further layers in an ambient soundscape.
The smaller sub-unit, meanwhile, independently houses natural elements such as stones and other materials that make up the plants' surrounding environment.
Though physically separated, the two units remain in constant visual and spatial dialogue with one another. Each stands as an independent presence, yet together they form a single natural world - one that can be experienced entirely on its own terms, undisturbed by the outside environment.
