This seven-metre piece was made in conjunction with the local farmer's co-op, using 9,000 bird-of-paradise flowers (Strelitzia).
Strelitzia has close associations with Okinawa, but in the local community it is mainly associated with funerals, so this work showed a new and different side of the flower. The sculpture was featured in a local newspaper, and after completion, the flowers were distributed to residents who visited the site.

この7mの作品は、地元の農協と共同で、9000本の極楽鳥花（ストレリチア）を使って作られた。
ストレリチアは沖縄にゆかりの深い花だが、地元では葬儀のイメージが強い。この彫刻は地元の新聞に掲載され、完成後は現地を訪れた住民に配られた。

Botanical Sculpture: Strelitzia × 9,000 IKERU KUN

This amazing place is designed by great architect, Tadao Ando.
The place is filled with verdure in spring, purple lavenders in summer and pure white snow in winter. One of the cemetery’s charms is how well is achieves harmony with the natural landscape.
This time, Azuma will arrange the gigantic “flower bouquet” on the hand of the great buddha with a wish of world peace.


この場所は、建築家・安藤忠雄によって設計された。
春は緑、夏は紫色のラベンダー、冬は真っ白な雪に包まれる。この霊園の魅力のひとつは、自然の景観との調和にある。
今回、東は世界平和の願いを込めて、大仏の手に巨大な「花束」を生けた。

Sequía y Sombra was an extension of Azuma's works that place flowers in environments that are usually inhospitable to plant life. In this case, he used yo locally sourced dried sunflowers to create an installation, around three metres high, on a salt lake in the north of Argentina.
The surroundings of the salt lake and the sunflowers proved to be a splendid combination. This project was exhibited at the 2019
BIENALSUR art biennial in Argentina.

Sequía y Sombraは、通常植物が生息できない環境に花を配置するという東の作品の延長線上にある。今回は、アルゼンチン北部の塩湖に、地元の乾燥ひまわりで高さ約3メートルのインスタレーションを制作した。
塩湖とひまわりの組み合わせは見事なものとなった。このプロジェクトは2019年のBIENALSURアート・ビエンナーレ（アルゼンチン）で展示された。

Botanical Sculpture: Sequía y Sombra (Drought and Shadow)

Azuma’s largest work to date, MEXX was created in response to SFER IK’s unique biophilic design and the surrounding wilderness. Made from locally-sourced materials similar to those involved in the museum’s construction—vines, concrete, and fiberglass—the sculpture composes an enormous array of live indigenous flowers to paint a picture of the country’s biological wealth. Over the course of the exhibition, the work will bloom into the museum space, blurring the line between man-made and natural expressions through the lens of the traditional Japanese conception of negative space—or ‘Ma’ (間). As much a performance as an artifact, at its core, Mexx asks if an artificial ecosystem can reach symbiosis and harmonize with nature. After dismantling the installation, SFER IK and Azuma will donate all living flowers to the local community.

東にとってこれまでで最大の作品である「MEXX」は、SFER IKのユニークなバイオフィリック・デザインと周囲の大自然に呼応して制作された。この作品は、美術館の建設に使われたのと同じ地元の素材（つる植物、コンクリート、ファイバーグラス）を用いて制作され、ブラジルの生態系の豊かさを表現するように、固有の花々によって構成された。展示期間中、作品は美術館の空間に咲き誇り、日本の伝統的な「間」の概念を通して、人工的な表現と自然の表現の境界があいまいになっていった。人工的な生態系は自然と共生し、調和することができるのだろうか。インスタレーションを解体した後、SFER IKと東は花をすべて地元のコミュニティに寄付した。
