The polypore or bracket fungus - a crescent-shaped mushroom chat grows on the trunks of trees - was the main motif for this work. Azuma says he was fascinated by the polypore's 'masculine' appearance, and its status as a pest in the natural world. He and his staff collected specimens of the mushroom around Japan: in Tokyo, Chiba, Gunma, Yamanashi, Gifu and Yamagata. Then with the idea of compensating for the missing sections of each fungus, additional parts were modelled from FRE (fibre-reinforced plastic) and gilded with gold, platinum or copper leaf.

木の幹に生える三日月型のキノコ、ポリポア（ブラケット菌）がこの作品の主なモチーフである。東は、ポリポアの「男性的」な外見と、自然界における害虫としての地位に魅了されたという。彼はスタッフとともに、東京、千葉、群馬、山梨、岐阜、山形と日本各地でこのキノコの標本を集めた。そして、それぞれのキノコの欠けている部分を補うことを考え、FRE（繊維強化プラスチック）で追加のパーツをモデリングし、金箔、プラチナ箔、銅箔で金メッキを施した。
